En: Luna Sea #2 / Unrivaled Rhythm Section

All right, here's the #2 of Luna Sea article.

In #1 article we mainly featured a guitar team SUGIZO & INORAN.

Now it's time to look into band's rhythm engine, J on bass & Shinya on drums!

Punk Vibe

In my opinion, J's musical profile is easiest to guess among these 5 members of Luna Sea.

Obviously, he is hugely influenced by punk and his figure on stage will remind you of a famous bass player in one monster rock band.

It's Duff Mckagan, the bassist of Guns N' Roses.

As some of you already know, they've shared a stage a couple of times in the past and known as good friends each other.

I certainly think he can do some flashy play too, but my favorite "J moment" is rhythm solo section of "Sweetest Coma Again" (2:12 ~)

I love this badass bass sound and break!

Drum Master Shinya

Why am I in "Luna Sea mode" from time to time though I've never been a real fan of this band?

It's largely due to (thanks to) this rhythm crazy, Shinya.

I can easily say that he is a No.1 Japanese rock drummer and there's only a few other drummers who make a song this dynamic & attractive to my ears.

Not only is his drumming always spot-on, but also really rich in nuances.

In slow - mid tempo songs his drum plays always go like a storyteller while his powerful beat drives the whole band in typical "Lunatic" songs like Rosier or Tonight.

I really like a drummer like him, who thinks highly of a context of songs and can solidly support vocals.

This is just my opinion, but the tightness J & Shinya creates is quite similar to the one by Duff Mckagan & Matt Sorum, who played together in GNR and Velvet Revolver.
